Zhao has obtained his doctor degree by the supported of China Scholarship Council and the University of Queensland (UQ) International Student Scholarship. He has also been employed as the casual researcher at the Centre of Architecture Criticism Theory History (ATCH) affiliated with the School of Architecture in UQ. Now, he is a Research Associate Professor who used to be awarded with “Yuxiu Young Scholars Program of Nanjing University”, “Jiangsu Excellent Postdoctoral Program”, and “Young Sci-Tech Think Tank Expert of Jiangsu Foreign Science and Technology Promotion Association”. He is also invited as Consultant of the 4th National Survey of Cultural Relics of Jiangsu Province, and appointed as the coordinator of International scientific research project at Nanjing University, the oversea postgraduate coordinator at School of Architecture and Urban Planning and the executive curator of Nanyong Exhibition Hall of Architecture.

His research interests focus on urban heritage governance and management, evaluative research on historic areas, the morphological principles of traditional architecture and historical districts. Zhao has presided over several national and provincial research fund, and published over thirty papers on architectural culture and heritage. He has been invited as a young editorial board member of Journal of Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology , the guest editor of Chinese Ancient Cities，and reviewer for several international SCI/SSCI/A&HCI journals, including International Journal of Heritage Studies, Heritage Science, Built Heritage, Humanities and Social Sciences Communications, Building Research & Information, and Urban Studies.

曾获得国家留学基金委公派留学项目与昆士兰大学优秀国际生奖学金资助攻读博士学位，同时担任昆士兰大学建筑理论与历史评论中心(ATCH)研究员；曾入选“南京大学毓秀青年学者计划”、“江苏省博士后日常资助计划”（现更名为：江苏省卓越博士后计划）、 “江苏省对外科学技术促进会科技青年智库专家”等人才项目，受聘第四次全国文物普查江苏省咨询专家，同时担任南京大学国际科考项目负责人、建筑与城市规划学院国际留学生项目负责人、与南雍建筑展览馆馆务执行人。

近期主要从事城市遗产管理与治理、历史地段的评价性研究、传统建筑与历史街区的形态规律等领域的研究。曾参与多项澳洲政府-高校合作项目以及澳洲联邦科学工业研究组织CSIRO的合作研究项目。研究曾入选联合国教科文组织-世界遗产天幕（World Heritage Canopy）项目。主持多项国家级、省部级与中央高校科研基金项目，在国内外重要学术期刊和会议中发表与遗产与建筑文化主题相关的论文三十余篇，并曾受邀担任《西安建筑科技大学学报》青年编委、《中国名城》特邀专栏主编，以及International Journal of Heritage Studies、Heritage Science、Built Heritage、Humanities and Social Sciences Communications、Building Research & Information、Urban Studies等多本国际SCI/SSCI/A&HCI期刊审稿人。
