Digital Technology in Architecture


建筑数字技术是立足于建筑设计,同时以计算机科学的视角进行的设计研究,包括设计的生成、分析、评估和建造。

建筑设计和研究的空间维度在向城市扩展,时间维度在向建筑全生命周期延伸,其涉及的学科领域也在不断增加。在此情况下,借助于数字化工具的模拟和再现,是展开研究的必要手段。

Based on architectural design, digital technology focuses on design researches by means of computer science, including design generation, analysis, evaluation and fabrication.

The spatial dimension of architectural design and research expands in urban areas and the time dimension extends into the overall life-cycle of building, along with the constant increase of concerned scientific disciplines and fields. Under this circumstance, it is necessary to unfold research by relying on the simulation and representation of digitalized tools.

 

基于数据处理的设计方法与技术是研究的核心内容,建筑的功能、结构、形式、环境都将被转化为数据,对数据的提取、管理和处理是进行设计的基础。研究同样关注对各类算法的应用,包括遗传算法、细胞自动机、多主体系统等优化算法是研究设计的重要工具。以数据为基础,应用算法工具,我们试图应对从建筑到城市不同尺度的问题和挑战。在此大框架下,我们的研究主要分为四个不同的方向:计算设计、性能化设计、数字建造和空间分析,涉及设计的分析、策略、生成、建造等多个层面。

Design methods and techniques based on data processing are the core contents of research. The function, structure, form and environment of architecture will all be turned into data. The acquisition, management and processing of data are the basis of design. The research also pays attention to the application of various kinds of algorithms, including genetic algorithm, cellular automata, and multi-agent system, as important tools for research and design.

On the basis of data and algorithms, we attempt to deal with problems and challenges in different scales ranging from architecture to cities. Under such a general framework, our research is chiefly divided into four different directions: computational design, performance-based design, digital fabrication and spatial analysis, involving many strata of analysis, strategy, generation and fabrication.

--基于规则和算法的设计研究

研究聚焦于设计过程中的规则提取和算法应用,结合参数变量的设置,生成更有趣且合理的设计成果。在此过程中,设计的功能、形态乃至结构都可以是规则提取的目标。而相对于形式本身,我们更关注其潜在规则和算法的科学性。研究包括空间结构体(互承结构、整体张拉结构、网格壳体)的几何规则生成、参数化生成设计方法和设计算法等。

 

--Design researches based on rules and algorithms

The researches focus on the acquisition of rules and algorithms application in the process of design in combination with the set-up of parametric variation to generate more interesting and reasonable design results. In this process, the building function, form and structure can all be the objectives for acquiring rules. As compared with the form itself, we pay more attention to the scientific meaning of potential rules and algorithms. The research includes geometric rule-based generation, parametric generation and design algorithms of spatial structures (reciprocal frame, tensegrity, gridshell).

从建筑设计角度探讨提高建筑物理性能的技术与方法研究

研究以建筑生命周期的能源消耗为评价指标,涉及光照、通风、能耗等模拟计算软件和遗传算法、细胞自动机、多主体系统等复杂科学理论,建立系统性的设计理论和路径。研究包括一体化设计技术、基于性能的生成设计、城市微气候与城市形态研究等方向。

 

--Technique and method researches on improving building performances through architectural design

Combining simulation software of illumination, ventilation and energy consumption as well as complex scientific theories of genetic algorithm, cellular automata and multi-agent system, the researches attempt to establish systematic design theories and approaches to improve buildings’ physical performances. The topics include integrated design technology, performance-based generative design, and correlation between urban form and microclimate.

针对数字建筑相关的建造问题的研究

随着机器人和三维打印等新型数控设备的发展,数字建筑的建造模式正在转变。研究一方面探讨常见技术下复杂建筑的建造问题,另一方面也强调新的建造技术对设计方法的推动作用。研究包括曲面重构(surface reconstruction)方法和技术、高技与低技(high tech and low tech)条件下的复杂形态建造(construction of complicated form)、数字加工与建造(digital fabrication and construction)、三维打印(3d printing)技术的应用等。

 

--Researches on the fabrication of digital architecture

With the development of such new computerized numerical control machine as robot and 3d printing, the way of construction is in change. The researches, on the one hand, endeavor to explore problems of fabricating complex building forms with common technology. On the other hand, it focuses on new fabrication technology in promoting design methods. The research topics include methods and techniques of surface reconstruction, construction of complicated forms under high-tech and low-tech conditions, digital fabrication and construction, as well as 3D printing.

城市尺度的数字化分析和研究

在城市尺度下,空间数据的数量更多,复杂程度更高。我们以GIS技术作为表现时空数据的基本平台,以大数据的管理和可视化、模型的建立、算法的应用等多种空间分析技术为手段,对从建筑到街区再到城市不同尺度的数据进行分析研究,并从中提取潜藏的信息,以解决城市发展所面临的复杂问题。

 

--Researches focusing on digitalized analysis, modeling and simulation in city scale

The spatial data of the city are huge and complex. With GIS as the basic platform of representation for space-time data, and with technological means of space analysis such as modeling, management and visualization of ‘big data’ and application of algorithms, the researches analyze and study urban spaces on a variety of scales, from building, urban block, to city. From it the potential information is extracted in order to solve the complicated problems facing urban development.
